Happy 2013! (yes I realize i’m a bit late but, better late that never?!)

It has been a whirlwind of a party getting to 2013 but it’s finally here and I am over the moon excited!

A couple of housekeeping items to start with;

  1. five focus is SO excited to announce that we will be offering private and group yoga sessions starting in March!! Eekkkk. My yogic path has been such an eye opening experience and I can’t wait to share all of my new found knowledge with you all. I will also be teaching classes at Lole Oakville in February and at Lululemon Lakeshore in March!! Words. Cannot. Describe. More details will be posted soon
  2. The website will be changing. One of my goals for 2013 will be to completely revamp the website; this will include a whole new look, oddles of new recipes and many more tips on getting you healthy head to toe, inside and out. We will also be changing our newsletter carrier- details on that change will come soon but have no fear, we will make sure you are kept completely up to date and within reach during the whole transition period.

How has the winter been treating you so far? The weather hasn’t been great here; there was so much potential with a big snow fall but now it’s all rainy and warm, my ‘winter of snowshoeing’ dreams are falling to s-it… at least I have my daily smoothie to keep me going!

My FAV green goddess goodness green godess goodness

  • 1 banana
  • ½ cup homemade almond milk
  • ½ cup coconut water
  • 1 big handful kale*
  • A shake or two of hemp seeds
  • 3-5 ice cubes
  • Blend & feel your inner goddess evolve

*If you have never tried kale before it can be a bit scary. Kale has a bitter taste and typically needs some preparation prior to consuming, but the health benefits are well worth it. When using kale in your smoothies (or anywhere really) be sure to use the leaves only instead of the stem. Just 1 cup of kale has 5grams of fiber and also contains sulfur which aids in digestion. Add to that Vitamins A,  C, D & K plus Omega 3 AND Calcium and it’s easy to see how this green goodness has been touted as a superfood. Add kale to stews, drinks, stir frys, pastas…

Sweet n’ Sweet Sweet n Sweet Smoothie

  • 1 banana
  • ½ cup apple juice
  • ½ cup coconut water
  • 2 big spoonfuls of almond butter or your fav nut butter
  • 1 average squirt of agave or natural sweetener
  • A shake or two of either hemp seeds or freshly ground flax seeds
  • 3-5 ice cubes
  • Blend and top with a sprinkle of cinnamon (?)

Hemp seeds are a great source of protein (3 tlbs contain 11 grams of protein!) and contain all 10 essential amino acids. These little fruits (yes, technically they are fruits not seeds) are also full of omega 3 & 6 and have a mild nutty flavour. Sprinkle on salads or cereals for added proteins and extra taste!
