Collagen- What is it and Does it Work?

in Uncategorized

People are running at full speed to get on the collagen train lately; with promises of improved digestion, ease of joint movement and reduced fine line and wrinkles who wouldn’t want in on the trend?! But does it really work? Here’s my experience…

Let’s start with some basics.

What is collagen?

Collagen is a protein that the body naturally produces, but this production lessens as we age which can greatly change the elasticity and appearance of the skin and your bones, muscles and tissues. Other factors such as sun exposure, environment, nutrition and exposures to toxins, such as cigarette smoke, drastically decrease collagen in the body.

So how do we maintain the collagen in our body?

The best wat to maintain collagen is eating the right foods and getting good sources of antioxidants from fruits and vegetables. Aim for brightly coloured produce which is full of powerful antioxidant lycopene, which helps prevent collagen deterioration. Leafy greens and fruits high in vitamin C should also be a large part of your daily regimen. Avoid starchy and sugary foods which promote inflammation which can interfere with your natural collagen production processes.

OK so let’s get down to it, shall we?!

I will admit, I wasn’t really sure what to expect; I was a little skeptical but I promised myself I would go in with an open mind. After 3 weeks of taking the Progressive Collagen Support supplement I did in fact have some positive benefits.

The most prominent was that the joint pain in my knees stopped when I walked up the stairs. It was actually amazing. It usually sounds like a whole lot of cricking and cracking when I move but after only a few weeks, the noise was gone and that irritating rubbing was no more. Side effect or happy coincidence? No idea, but I like it!

I didn’t notice much difference in my skin or fine lines. There wasn’t any noticeable change in the elasticity or the general appearance although I will say I felt like maybe I had a little more glow than usual. Another of the top ‘promises’ hailed by collagen enthusiasts includes improvement to bathroom routines, and while this is always a fairly sensitive subject for me, I didn’t notice any changes. This would take quite the miracle though, so I wasn’t holding my breath on this one.

While I didn’t experience all of the benefits that many have claimed to experience, the joint relief is definitely enough to make me want to keep taking the Progressive Collagen Support supplement. One last note about the Progressive Collagen Support; I tried the Tropical flavour and to be honest there wasn’t too much taste. This is a good thing actually! It was super easy to add to my morning smoothie without worrying about changing the taste. It had a nice flavour when I simply added to water but it wasn’t harsh, it was nice and refreshing. There is also a Citrus flavour and unflavoured.

Have you tried collagen supplements? What was your experience like?
