DIY Veggie & Fruit Wash

in General, Yummy Eats

In these days of the great organics/pesticides conflicts, many people ‘buy’ into the fruit & veggie washes to rid their precious nutrient laden wares of pesky bacteria; but these sprays can get expensive, and some aren’t all they are cracked up to be.
It is, as with most opinions of organics, always a debate as to whether water rinsing is enough. Some say oui, others non.

So what is one to do?
Well in my humble opinion I say better safe than full of ick.
Here’s a great DIY fruit & veggie wash that is sure to ease your mind. And if this one doesn’t suit your fancy a quick search on Google will be able to provide you with numerous alternatives; just be sure to research- I actually saw one that recommends you soak your produce in clorex bleach. (?!?!)

DIY Fruit & Veggie Wash / Spray

  • 1 Tbsp. Lemon juice – (natural disinfectant)
  • 2 Tbsp. Vinegar -white or ACV (cleans the fruits and vegetables neutralizes most pesticides)
  1. Fill a sink or large bowl with water, add the above ingredients and let it sit for about 20 minutes then rinse and dry.
  2. If a spray bottle is more your style fill a bottle with water and add the lemon + vinegar. Spray & wipe. {if you choose to use a spray bottle please choose wisely. Picking a super cheap one that will leech chemicals into your wash kind of defeats the purpose}

Note: If you will be cutting into the produce ALWAYS wash the outside first, even if you aren’t going to eat the peel/rind. As the knife slices into the fruit/veg it will drag any bacteria down into the flesh with it.
