pH Balancing Smoothie Bowl

in Uncategorized

Smoothies are a fantastic way to get in your daily nutrients for optimal health. You can add everything from fibre to protein to antioxidants to hormone balancers. But what do you do when everything you are doing right isn’t quite hitting the mark? Enter Genuine Health’s greens+….putting said smoothie into a bowl doesn’t hurt either!

Now before I keep going let me throw out this quick disclaimer- I was approached and asked to participate in a 21 day pH balancing challenge with Genuine Health in partnership with Goodness Me. They supplied me with the greens+ and testing strips BUT all opinions and endorsements are completely my own.

So before I get into how my first week  and a half of balancing my pH went, let’s first talk for a minute about what pH means and why the heck it’s important.

pH is a way of measuring the acidity or alkalinity of an aqueous solution. If you want to be all fancy about it the formula looks like this: pH = -log10[H+]

Basically, for our purposes, your pH level determines if your body is acidic or alkaline. The scale ranges from 1 to 14, the lower the number the higher the acidity,  with a neutral rating at 7. Typically a slightly alkaline rating is best, between 7.35-7.45. During this challenge i’ve been testing every morning using litmus testing paper and my morning pee. You can use saliva but urine seems to be more accurate.

There are so many repercussions from having an acidic body. To name a few;

  • Obesity, slow metabolism and inability to lose weight
  • Slow digestion and elimination
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Mood swings
  • High blood pressure
  • Weight gain, diabetes
  • Bladder and kidney conditions, including kidney stones
  • Premature aging
  • Osteoporosis, weak or brittle bones, fractures and bone spurs.
  • Joint pain, aching muscles and lactic-acid buildup
  • Low energy and chronic fatigue

So how has my journey been you ask? So kind of you…..well, my first couple of days testing I thought I must have been doing something wrong or I was sent some bad testing strips. I could not believe how acidic my body was. I was testing at 5.5 which is very acidic. By day 5 I was up to 5.8. I was diligent with my greens+ powder. I really was curious to see how much of a change I could make. By day 9 I was up to 6.0. Definitely an improvement. It’s now day 15 and I am proud to say that a solid 6.6. So while i’m on the up and up I’m most excited about how to include greens+ powder into my daily without getting bored. Here’s one of three fun recipes i’ve come up with…

The alkalizing smoothie bowl!

pH Balance smoothie blueberries coconut banana granola

Isn’t she beautiful?! OK so here’s how I made it.

  • 1 frozen banana + 1/2 small fresh banana
  • 1/4 cup coconut milk {homemade is preferred}
  • a pinch of salt
  • juice of a 1/4 lemon
  • 2 teaspoons greens+ powder

Blend together and top with your fave goodies. I used fresh figs, blueberries, shredded coconut and some homemade granola.

Keep these tips in mind when picking your toppings; the darker the fruit the better, store bought granola is typically super high in sugar- not good, and green tea can be an amazing addition to the actual smoothie portion…ok that’s not a topping tip but you get the point.

Happy alkalizing! :)
